'Ulrich Timm has been gardens editor of "Live Beautifully" magazine for many years'. Gary Rogers is one of the world's foremost garden photographers. Garden design is exciting in part because it reflects the architectural language of the house, as well as the preferences of the garden owner. As in fashion, almost any mix of classical elements and modern accessories is permitted, often leading to a new art riot of flair and hue. Many new materials have found acceptance with leading garden designers, bringing fresh colour and contrast to the garden and introducing new textures and shapes. Such elements as swimming ponds, curiously shaped bushes, the renaissance of the shrub and charming plant combinations are also in vogue, along with inventive lighting. All these factors go to make up the sensory overload that is the modern garden.
