"As someone who voted against Trump twice, I understand those citizens-many of whom are (or were) friends-who do not want him to be allowed to run again. I am a liberal Democrat who would strongly prefer someone of my political persuasion to be president. But some are advocating and undertaking "get Trump" measures that violate civil liberties, constitutional rights, and the rule of law. This short book is a critique of those dangerous measures that may create precedents that will surely be used by all sides of the political spectrum. We live in a deeply divided nation, where extremists in both parties are pushing out traditional, centrist liberals and conservatives. Many of them are young and represent the, future. That is why current attacks on our freedom-to dissent, to represent dissidents, and to petition our government for redress-are more insidious in many ways than past efforts at repression, even McCarthyism, which I lived through. The premise of this book is that the abridgment of rights being undertaken in an effort to stop Trump from running is more dangerous and potentially more enduring than the election of Trump would be. Make no mistake about it: I believe that the reelection of Trump would not be good for America. I hope he is defeated by proper and constitutional means. That's why I insist that my fundamental right to vote against him for the third time not be denied by improper and unconstitutional means."
